Health insurance

Medical care for a foreign tourist who falling ill in France:
1- You are from the European Economic Area (EEA) or from Switzerland
If you are from a country that is a member of the European Economic Area (the group of 25 European Union States + Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway + Switzerland) and you are on holiday in France, Social Security will take charge of the care according to the basic French fee. In order for you and your family to benefit from this advantage, before your departure you must obtain the European health insurance card [CEAM (carte européenne d'assurance maladie)] from your own health insurance agency.

You can choose the practitioner or the establishment, but to avoid advance fees and long reimbursement periods, ask for a list of physicians and approved hospitals from the consulate or the French embassy.

Be aware that since June 1, 2004 the CEAM has been progressively replacing form E 111 and certain private insurance agencies do not deliver this document.

Be also aware that Overseas French Territories (New Caledonia, Polynesia, Saint Pierre and Miquelon), the Anglo-Norman Islands and all the areas outside of the EEA (except for Switzerland) are excluded from the disposition.

2- You are from a country that is outside of the European Economic Area (EEA)
Before coming to France on holiday, enquire about the possibilities for reimbursement by your local insurance agency; if necessary present your bills to them when you return. In general the French Social Security does not offer health reimbursement to tourists from countries outside of the EEA.

Please note that except for rare cases (the Franco-Algerian protocol, for example), the bilateral conventions concluded between your country and the French Social Security do not provide health coverage in France for tourist visits.
